BFH should consider a sixth boat.
Can one get all the gear and folks downstream with 4 boats?
A trip can get all of the gear on 4 boats, but the boats will seem less responsive and be more difficult to row, and possibly sustain more damage to components in case of a flip or collision.
Should we bring more straps? You will have a surplus of straps in your strap bag. Our boats are designed to be easy to rig with preset straps in place for ease of rigging.
Do you have Umbrellas for rent? The "door to door" comes with umbrellas for every boat. One can rent umbrellas/stand for 2$/day.
Do you have chairs for rent?Groups traveling by plane leave chairs with us to pass on to other folks. We gladly hand them out at the Riverhouse and suggest one completely look them over before taking them downriver. We rent a sturdier, hardwood chair called the lowrider for 1$/day. It is ergonomically correct for a comfortable relaxing chair to sit in.

MENUS? Whats the timeframe on getting menus to MOE?Because we do many custom menus, prefeeze our meat into the coolers, and provide a quantities list for every trip we need to have your menus spreadsheet 2 months in advance of your trip. This directly effects the quality of your trip! If you can give us more time? BETTER:) Build your own menu at moenkopiriverworks.com/outfitting/food.php or pick one pre-set menu on the same page and alter it anyway you would like.
For special needs please spell them out at the bottom
Remember, after we receive your spreadsheet, we will build a quantities menu for your approval. If you have specific attachments to your food this is your time to have your needs met.
What kind of coffee do you offer?toucanetcoffee.com
Although most trips have a surplus of coffee if you drink morning and night, let us know.
How is the food packed?Day Boxes are packed by Day and later become a trashcan. Day 1 has Dinner, Breakfast, Lunch. Coolers are packed accordingly by MEAT, DAIRY, PRODUCE. This is done for safety and sanitary techniques. Meat should be stored alone with meat. Produce should be monitored everyday for ripeness and used accordingly, we suggest you drain this cooler throughout the trip. If one leaves bad produce in their cooler it will turn other produce bad. For this reason packing coolers by day are not recommended.
What are the premade menu items exactly?Moenkopi Riverworks has coupled with a local caterer in town that makes great pre-made menu items that he seals into a vacuum sealed bag. For stuffed pork chops for example, Basically all one must do is blast the chickey pail water you intend to use for dishes. After it is at a rolling boil(5 min) transfer it onto the stove at simmer and put the bags in the water for 20 minutes. On the side you are given a side such as rice, quinoa, cous cous, quesadillas or pasta. Make this side while your dinner is heating and WALA! Dinners done 20 minutes, wash waters ready and very few dishes need to be done short of individual dishes. You get 3 free with your quoted menu price. Each additional dinner costs 5$/person. Check out Brady's EZ WAY MENU! For only an extra $35/person one can have 10 Pre-made Dinners and 6 GRILL Night Dinners. Ultra EZ!
Exchanging folks at Phantom? When should we arrive at Phantom?Normally folks choose to do their exchange at Phantom Ranch on day 6 or 7. Day 6 Phantom exchange gives folks a general goal of 14 miles per day which can be done with approximately 4 hours of rowing/day. Exchanging at Phantom Ranch gives folks access to the Bright Angel Trail which has many water refill stations and is well traveled in case of emergency. This hike will be strenuous, possibly hot so the group should stress an early launch on the trail for outbound hikers in the hotter months. Also, groups should carry plenty of salty, hearty replenishment of electrolytes on their hike. We suggest hiking before or when the sun comes up in the warmer months.
So, where should we camp the night before an exchange? For folks exchanging at Phantom or the Kaibob, the NPS suggests camping between Grapevine(A big camp not suggested for groups of 8, try Zoraster instead) and Cremation(A double Camp). Because many groups exchange, the NPS also suggests to help these groups by not camping in this area if you are not doing an exchange. Please communicate with groups around you so you don't force exchangers out of a vital camp for their exchange.
For a good boatman the Cremation camp can have access to Phantom through an eddy jump if the hikers need a lift to camp early and if the boatman wishes to return to Cremation. This should not be attempted by boatmen that do not know how to read and traverse eddies.
How do our hikers get to and from Flagstaff from the South Rim?If hikers are hiking in while hikers are hiking out, we suggest to use one of your trip cars for the exchange. Hikers hiking in can schedule a time with MOE(928 526 6622 or 877 454 7483) to pickup the car or if the hikers in have their car and want it to be stored for them at the end of their trip, they can give their keys to the hikers out and let them know to drop the car at MOE. The TL paid for all hikers to be in the park with their river permit. If the hikers in want to enter into the Park for free the TL should have or get a free permit from the park for the hikers in. 1 800 959 9164 #5.
If no car is available? Hikers to and from can jump the arizonashuttle.com that has 3 shuttles departing the South Rim to Flagstaff/day and 3 shuttles departing Flagstaff to the South Rim/day. If the group hiking in or out wants to rent the Riverhouse(grandcanyonhouse.blogspot.com), the Riverhouse is a $75/min or $25/person if available. Moenkopi Staff can pickup the hikers out at the Train Station or one can jump the city bus for a 1$ fee. Route 4, stop 11 will land you right at the riverhouse. If someone needs a ride to the airport just let us know.
How long will the hike take? The hike in will take approximately 4 hours to Phantom. The hikers out will take approximately 6 hours out to the South Rim.
Do we have other exchange options? gcrafting.blogspot.com (Look for exchanges)How about the South Kaibob? SK is the shortest trail to the river(7 miles). Because of this it is a bit steeper. Take hiking poles for the knees. It will take you right to the Boatmans Beach at Phantom. There is no water on the south kaibob. One can ride the park shuttle from the Maswik lodge to the South Kaibob Trailhead.
http://nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/shuttle-buses.htm Experienced, sturdy lightly packed Woggers can reach the boatmens beach in 3 hours.
Hermit? is my favorite hike out. It also has no water on the trail, and should be thought of as a more difficult hike. Carrying a minimum of 6 liters and snacks/electrolyte replacement is a must. Trips doing this exchange should camp at the Hermit Beach above the rapid. This route is not suggested in the summer months and if someone does attempt the exchange they should leave ultra early which is easy to do as the hike is right out the back of camp. We started our hike at 4:45 am. It took 6 hours your results may vary. It is likely you will be camping with, or near hikers, please be gracious and show them ultimate respect and hospitality by taking out their trash or letting them use your Grover:) Communicate to groups around you that you have an exchange at Hermit and that you would appreciate the use of Hermit.
Does MOE rent an electric power device for charging cameras and ipods? The battery back up system consists of a 75 hr marine battery, inverter for normal 3 prong outlets, and solar trickle charger so you will never run out of power. In addition, an 18 foot long led lighting system for late camps in addition to your already available lanterns from the kitchen. It is 4$/day and comes in a regular 20mm ammo can.
Can MOE handle our Hualapai fee's?Moe is happy to handle the Hualapai Fee's. Your trip doesn't need to respond to the Hualapai Permit in anyway if MOE takes care of the H-fee's. If requested we will put it on your invoice and pay it at the beach for you.
Is there a damage deposit?
There is a damage deposit by authorization of a credit card for $2000. As TL we suggest that you add on your own buffer to your total shared expense for the group. If your trip will cost $1200 total for NPS Permits, MOE, etc. then we suggest the TL/PH add a $50-$100 buffer in case of lost or damged items. In this case your $1200 trip will be $1250 or $1300. After the trip, when the damages are assessed, which will take approximately 2 wks-month(Satellite phone charges), then the trip leader can give the money back and everyones happy because they received money back. This technique also helps the TL/PH make changes without consulting the 16 people or having to get more money.
Can MOE send back packages by UPS for us?Moe can send back packages for your trip. Please have them packed up with the address and phone # clearly labeled on the trip. We charge a fee of $15/trip to cover time/expenses.
Does MOE except tips?
Employees of MOE expect nothing and are very appreciative of any extra consideration shown. They go the extra mile because they want you to have a great trip. In my eyes(proud owner), employees are not compensated to their fullest effort. The benefits to clients are our most valuable service and best price. Tips ALWAYS exclude the owner and target the minimum of 6 people that try extra hard to provide you with enough gear, food to have a great trip. Any tips are appreciated.
When will we be cleared of our Deposit or Damages?Because of the intense nature of cleaning and repairing your gear it may take up to a month. We try to have your checkout done as quickly as possible. We will not be able to provide damage feedback at the ramp. We stress test every oar before it goes out and on it's return. This is the number one thing that gets damaged. Although the oars are the best money can buy, they crush easily during collisions with rocks and other boats. Please stress to your participants not to collide with another boat. Things happen. Next, lost items like umbrellas, strap bags and the occasional silver box. Rig to Flip. If you have padded your coffer as we have suggested damages can be easy to deal with:)
